Lifestyle IOLs Tackle the Challenges of Presbyopia and Astigmatism

Prior to the arrival of Lifestyle Intraocular Lenses (IOLs), the traditional approach to treating cataracts involved replacing the natural lens with a standard, artificial IOL. While distance vision was corrected, patients still needed reading glasses (due to presbyopia) following standard IOL cataract surgery. The fact is that most adults over age 40 experience some loss of close-up focusing ability because their lenses become stiffer over time.

Multifocal and Extended Depth of Focus Lifestyle lenses now allow our surgeons to correct presbyopia at the same time they are correcting cataracts. For patients with astigmatism, Toric lenses can provide clear vision at distance.

A recent Medicare revision allows patients covered for cataract surgery to choose these Lifestyle IOLs at an added fee.

Multifocal IOLs for Cataracts & Presbyopia

Inland Eye Institute uses the AcrySof ReStor IOL to treat reading vision problems caused by presbyopia to allow for clear near, intermediate and distance vision.

Extended Depth of Focus IOLs for Cataracts & Presbyopia

The TECNIS Symfony IOL is the first and only Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lens that allows for high quality, seamless vision at any distance. Rather than having two focal points for light, the Symfony lens elongates the focus of the eye to allow for more continuous vision without blurry zones.

Astigmatism-Correcting IOLs

The condition of astigmatism is addressed by the technology of the AcrySof Toric as well as the ReStor Toric and Symfony Toric IOLs. These Lifestyle IOLs can provide cataract patients with distance vision without eye glasses or contacts, with the latter two addressing astigmatism at distance AND near.

We’ll take all the time necessary to provide you with detailed information about your vision condition and treatment options. For more information on Lifestyle IOLs and choosing the best lens for your cataract surgery, contact the cataract specialists, John Kim, M.D. and Erika Sanchez M.D., at Inland Eye Institute to schedule a Cataract Evaluation.
